The research is clear- unresolved early trauma disrupts the lives of individuals in many ways. A vast majority of people with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) have also experienced prolonged interpersonal trauma in their lives, resulting in Complex PTSD. Studies indicate that people with PTSD are two to four times more likely to have an SUD compared to the general population and that more than 50% of people receiving PTSD treatment have a co-occurring issue with substance use.

This training differentiates between a diagnosis of PTSD and complex trauma. It will help clinicians strengthen their skills to provide trauma-informed treatment to individuals living with Complex PTSD and SUD. We will explore the ACE study and review the implications for mental health and substance use vulnerability in terms of unrecognized early trauma and neglect. Participants will examine trauma from a developmental and strength-based lens to help identify interventions to mitigate the impact of complex trauma and help individuals begin the recovery process from trauma and substance use.
