Examining trends in behavioral health data is critical to preventing and treating substance use. The purpose of this webinar is to present patterns of Florida’s statewide and regional substance use in comparison to national trends. Using a variety of sources, data characterizing substance use mortality, morbidity and select health behaviors for Florida and its regions will be presented.

During this webinar, recent patterns of substance use will be described for Florida overall, and by Managing Entity Region (when data are available at the county and/or regional level). In addition, these patterns will be presented over time. These Florida-specific patterns and trends will be presented in the context of the patterns and trends occurring at the national level. Data characterizing mortality, morbidity, and select health behaviors related to the use of substances from a variety of sources will be presented.Mortality rates for select substances over time will be presented for the state as a whole, as well as by Managing Entity region. In addition, poisoning-related morbidity will be characterized for the state. Data for substance-related health behaviors will also be presented from several sources, including the latest releases of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2017 – 2018) and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (2018).

This webinar is designed for clinicians, behavioral health professionals, clinical supervisors, program managers, prevention agencies, community coalitions, Certified Recovery Support Specialists (CRSS), Certified Recovery Peer Specialists (CRPS), and executives in substance abuse and mental health agencies, Managing Entities, and DCF program staff.

Presented by:

Kelly K. Gurka, MPH, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Florida. She earned an MPH at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, after which she served as a maternal and child health epidemiologist in the Alabama Department of Public Health. Dr. Gurka then earned her Ph.D. in epidemiology with an emphasis on injury prevention and control at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; she was the recipient of the 2007 Susan P. Baker Student Paper Prize.

Up to 2.0 Continuing Education Units/Contact Hours are provided at no cost for individuals meeting the attendance requirements and complete the training evaluation.
