News Two Grant Results Topic Summaries Review Approaches to Preventing Substance Abuse Between 1989 and 2006 the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation invested more than $400 million in efforts to prevent substance abuse (including underage drinking) which explored two basic approaches-behavioral, which focuses on individuals' behavior, and environmental, which focuses on communities and attempts to change the environment that supports substance abuse. Two recent reports describe the grant results, findings and lessons learned from RWJF-supported efforts that used these approaches to prevent substance abuse, especially by youth.
