Substance Use and Abuse and the Risk of Suicide

2.0 CEU/Contact Hours Available

Presented By:
Dr. Lanny Berman

Event Date: 02-26-2013

Event Description: Substance abuse, dependence, and even increased substance use in an undiagnosed person, are major risk factors for suicide and suicidal behavior across all ages and in multiple populations. Both as a chronic risk factor and an acute factor, substance abuse contributes significantly to suicidal risk, both directly, for example, by decreasing inhibitory controls, and indirectly, due to shared risk factors. Accordingly, the 2012 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention includes multiple objectives to improve assessment and intervention to decrease this risk in patients being treated in behavioral health and substance abuse treatment centers. This presentation will overview the empirically-defined relationship between substance abuse and suicide risk, address strategies for assessment and formulation of suicide risk among substance abusing populations, and propose prevention strategies.

The Adolescent Brain and High Risk Behaviors

2.0 CEU/Contact Hours Available

Presented By:
Michael Nerney

Event Date: 06-20-2012

Event Description: Recent research indicates that the timeframe from 14 year to 24 years of age is exceptionally risky. New insights into brain development, gained through the use of new technology, demonstrate specific conditions that exist in the brain only during adolescence. Linking this research to the stages of adolescent development has generated better understanding of the way in which adolescents perceive the world, themselves, and their behaviors. In this webinar, participants will learn the impact of high risk behaviors on the adolescent brain, long term outcomes of underage drinking and drug abuse and prevention strategies to address the risk behaviors.
